Australia asks Google and FB to share ad revenue with media firms

Internet based companies like Facebook and Google usually make money for the same countries where they are.  They do their business in other countries, but still some countries are not happy with this.

Australia has asked Facebook and Google to share the advertising revenue in the country with the local media firm.  Significantly, Australia has become the first country to demand money for content from the digital platform.

Local media players in Australia complain that the dominance of big tech companies is more in advertising.  In such a situation, advertising is also the main source of their earnings.

Facebook vs Google

Treasurer Friedenberg has said, 'We understand the challenge we are facing and it is like climbing a big mount'.  They have also said that these are the big companies that we are dealing with, but we have a lot at stake, we are ready for this fight.

The Australian government has asked the country's Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to frame a Mandatory Code of Conduct that can formulate payment rules between digital platforms and media outlets.

Freudenberg has said that the Mandatory Code will include data sharing, ranking of news and the revenue generated from display to news.

Facebook and Google have managed to capture digital content in a way and it is not limited to any country, but it is so worldwide.  Facebook and Google also work on the revenue sharing model with the news organization.

However, there are some flaws in the current business model.  Because of this, Google and Facebook also make money from content that they never make and those who are the real content creators get only a small part of the revenue.

On the other hand, when it comes to the news organization, journalists are hired here, crores of rupees have to be spent in building a system from technical staff to content generation.  Apart from this, news agencies have to pay money from photos.

That is, the news organization spends all the money to create a content, but companies like Facebook and Google benefit from the same content.

It is worth noting that such things did not arise before the Corona virus crisis, but now many countries are getting the idea of this and now policy is being worked on.

France is also one of the countries where Corona crisis is high and number of people affected by it.  This country has ordered Google to pay publishers for their content use.

However, India has not said anything like this till now nor is there any kind of conversation about it here.  Will India also order Google and Facebook like these countries?
